Next, he describes how he's been involved with the Golden Dawn tradition since his late teens and the appeal for him stems from its capacity to transform practitioners. It was important to Peregrin to account for this potential for inner transformation in his book, By Names and Images, as opposed to the outer manifestations of the Golden Dawn, as expressed by Israel Regardie. From there, Wildoak talks about his personal history in Golden Dawn lodges, his teachers, as well as his thoughts about the fact that much of the Golden Dawn tradition is in the public domain. Notably, Peregrin points out that despite the standardized public versions of the rituals and meditations, diversity of thought about theory and practice flourishes in the various GD lodges throughout the world. The 2012 Seattle Esoteric Book Conference panel discussion, entitled "Eastern Thought in the Western Occult World," was recorded on Sunday, September 16, 2012. Most of the key historical figures of the Western esoteric tradition, including the Knights Templar, the mythical Brother C.R.C., Helena Blavatsky, Albert Pike, and Aleister Crowley have found both inspiration and instruction from Eastern sources. The journey to the East has always held a place of tremendous importance for those interested in esotericism and this trend continues today. Almost every practitioner and teacher of Western esotericism that I know of has very deep roots in Eastern tradition(s). Most books on the subject employ Sanskrit terms to relate ideas because readers are already more familiar with words that come from a foreign culture. What are some of the deeper implications of these facts? In this panel discussion, our intention was to examine some of the pervasive Eastern influence in Western esotericism with the hope of gaining greater understanding. It is our hope that a deeper grasp of the historical and cultural influences from the East leads to a greater appreciation of the Western esoteric tradition, inspiring further attainment and realization by its practitioners. To begin the interview, Thiebes describes his interest in esotericism, specifically Thelema. While he initially was a member of the Order of De Molay and a Freemason, Joseph's interest waned and he was drawn more towards ceremonial magick and eventually Ordo Templi Orientis. He dedicated his life to Thelema and the promulgation of its Law because of his steadfast belief that this radical form of liberty should be spread throughout the world. Joseph specifies Thelema as a religious philosophy which stipulates that every individual has the right and duty to find and manifest their true will, or inmost nature, derived from Liber AL vel Legis, the Book of the Law. Thiebes also discusses the way in which Thelema overturns previously existing religious paradigms, asserting the inherent divinity of humanity and valuing science over superstition. “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.” “There is no Law beyond Do what thou wilt.” “The word of the Law is Θελημα.” ΘΕΛΗΜΑ—Thelema—means Will. The Key to this Message is this word—Will. The first obvious meaning of this Law is confirmed by antithesis; “The word of Sin is Restriction.” Again: “Thou hast no right but to do thy will. Do that and no other shall say nay. For pure will, unassuaged of purpose, delivered from the lust of result, is every way perfect.” Take this carefully; it seems to imply a theory that if every man and every woman did his and her will—the true will—there would be no clashing. “Every man and every woman is a star,” and each star moves in an appointed path without interference. There is plenty of room for all; it is only disorder that creates confusion. From these considerations it should be clear that “Do what thou wilt” does not mean “Do what you like.” It is the apotheosis of Freedom; but it is also the strictest possible bond. Do what thou wilt—then do nothing else. Let nothing deflect thee from that austere and holy task. Liberty is absolute to do thy will; but seek to do any other thing whatever, and instantly obstacles must arise. Every act that is not in definite course of that one orbit is erratic, an hindrance. Will must not be two, but one. Note further that this will is not only to be pure, that is, single, as explained above, but also “unassuaged of purpose.” This strange phrase must give us pause. It may mean that any purpose in the will would damp it; clearly the “lust of result” is a thing from which it must be delivered. But the phrase may also be interpreted as if it read “with purpose unassuaged”—i.e., with tireless energy. The conception is, therefore, of an eternal motion, infinite and unalterable. It is Nirvana, only dynamic instead of static—and this comes to the same thing in the end. The obvious practical task of the magician is then to discover what his will really is, so that he may do it in this manner, and he can best accomplish this by the practices of Liber Thisarb (see Equinox I(7), p. 105) or such others as may from one time to another be appointed. Thou must (1) Find out what is thy Will. (2) Do that Will with a) one-pointedness, (b) detachment, (c) peace. Then, and then only, art thou in harmony with the Movement of Things, thy will part of, and therefore equal to, the Will of God. This interview runs about an hour and twenty minutes or so because it was necessary to have an extended amount of time to devote to Crowley and Kaczynski's marvelous book about him. Contained within are Kaczynski's thoughts about Crowley, and as the foremost authority on the subject (based on this biography), it is not only interesting, but invaluable. I cannot praise Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley enough. It is perhaps the most insightful and well-researched biography of any historical figure of the Western esoteric tradition and I highly recommend it to you. Godwin shares his perspectives on fiction versus non-fiction, traditionalism versus liberalism, Eastern esotericism versus Western esotericism, and music and alchemy. Rather than attempt to summarize his views, I would encourage you to listen to the recording as Godwin is one of the most erudite and important scholars of Western esotericism in the world today. I will, however, praise The Forbidden Book as a wonderful novel that is realistic, widely-accessible, and a thrilling read. In my opinion, this is simply the best work of occult fiction that I've ever read and sets the standard for the genre. The finely crafted plot, nuanced characters, and realism with regard to magick, alchemy, symbolism, and political / religious extremism make this novel an exquisite read, with no suspension of disbelief required. Philip begins our interview describing his great interest in, and extensive research of William Walker Atkinson. We discuss Atkinson's life and the dire circumstances that led to his becoming passionate about practical philosophies for self-improvement. Philip describes how Atkinson went missing for weeks, only to re-emerge as an ever more prolific writer on metaphysics, eastern philosophy, occultism, and New Thought. Even before The Kybalion, Walker's work is notable as he wrote under a number of pseudonyms. For example, as Yogi Ramacharaka, "Atkinson's writings ... marked some of the first full-length books in English to seriously address the subject of yoga as a practice to engage in, even if they partially filtered that practice through physical culture, Theosophy, and New Thought." As Magus Incognito he delivered The Secret Doctrine of the Rosicrucians, as Theron Q. Dumont he wrote several books on mental science and healing, and his Arcane Teachings was written anonymously. Philip also convincingly contends that Atkinson was the sole author of The Kybalion, writing as Three Initiates. Because of Atkinson's former career as an attorney and his aptitude for the vocation, it seems a natural extension that his most influential works would present philosophies that continuously reiterate the concept of LAW. Even though this appears to be a most thorough and balanced approach, addressing both the intellectual and experiential aspects, his "pre-modern" views inevitably caused some difficulties in the academy. Nicholaj's  interest in witchcraft led directly to Palo Mayombe through the recognition of the difference in the treatment of the cauldron, n'ganga, prenda, or spirit vessel. Nicholaj discusses the history, theology, and cosmology of Palo Mayombe. He stresses the importance of initiation and ancestry to this living tradition and direct contact with the spirits of the lineage. We also discuss necromancy and opinions about so-called high and low magick. In The King's Book of Numerology Volume One: Foundations and Fundamentals, Richard Andrew King had done something remarkable. He has provided seekers with comprehensive, but simple ways to interpret their lives and navigate the future. The book is essentially a doorway through which the reader may enter in order to begin seeing and interpreting the world in a way that is logical and magickal, albeit with a bit of work required. I found the information about numbers and their meanings to be entirely complimentary to other teachings in tangential areas such as Qabalah, Tarot, and Astrology.  If you're looking to learn more about numerology, I highly recommend Richard's book. Clark and Forbes deserve credit for making the concepts of the Western Mystery tradition accessible to a very wide audience. "The original text of The Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis was written between 1997-2007 during my 10 year hiatus from visual art, when spiritual practice and scholarship was my main concern. The book is a radical analysis of the first 3 chapters of the Book of Genesis. It assumes the form of a line by line commentary of the biblical text, and is supported copiously with quotes from many important and obscure Kabbalistic and alchemical texts. It directly challenges both exoteric as well as esoteric assumptions about the nature and function of Biblical creation symbolism and creativity itself, and brings into question many conventional modes of interpretation that have gone unquestioned for centuries. For better or worse, it is unique in all of western esoteric literature as the only study of its kind." - David Chaim Smith As we begin the interview, David describes what makes his commentary on the first three chapters of the Book of Genesis unique. Primarily, he discards several commonly held beliefs about the text, including religious meaning, the idea that it is a literal history of the creation event in linear time, and the morality that is often associated with the story through ideas such as original sin, the fall of man, and messianic redemption. David is not a theist and does not "reify a creator God." He repeatedly stresses that he is only interested in the symbolic language contained in the text which reveals a masterful exposition on the nature of human consciousness. David describes the first chapter of Genesis as an exposition on the creative process through the agency of the Ten Sefirot of the Tree of Life, providing a way to examine all phenomena. He defines the second chapter as "... a symbolic account of the primordial gnosis of the human mind in its capacity to open and reveal its potential." The esoteric equations therein containing the meaning of Adam are profound, according to Smith. He refers to the the third chapter as showing "... the consequences of conventional habituation, which is a turning away from the capacity to the primordial gnosis which is our birthright ... the story of the 'so-called' fall ... is another encoded series of equations that describes the function of consciousness engaged in a certain activity." From there we spiral off into explorations of the implications of David's ideas and interpretations, the nature of consciousness, both illuminated and mundane, challenging not only conventional exoteric religious dogma, but accepted esoteric doctrines as well. Not only is David Chaim Smith's artwork phenomenal as vibrant biomorphic phantasmagoria that beautifully conveys the majesty of creation through symbolism of ancient Kabbalistic texts, but his writing, and the accompanying diagrams and drawings, is of such an exquisite caliber that it often leaves me speechless. Several of the subjects covered are not likely to be found in other books and I also think it may represent one of the more comprehensive Western esoteric spiritual practices than I've encountered in print. Mark has really written a wonderfully updated and modern book on Hermetic Alchemical Qabalah that is also very personal. I recommend it! "There are no degrees, lessons, laws, requirements, or restrictions of any kind in the H.M.L., save Truth." We begin the interview by talking about their interest in esoteric studies and alternative spirituality. From there we learn about the origins of the Horus / Maat Lodge. Nema describes a group time-travel ritual in which she and others encountered a being from the future, named N'Aton. N'Aton is perceived as the idealized emerging consciousness of our species and its manifestation is the goal of the central ritual of the lodge. This event was closely followed by the transmission of "Liber Pennae Praenumbra" which announced the beginning of the Aeon of Maat in 1974. "In this Aeonic system, the Aeon of Horus began in 1904 with the writing of Liber AL vel Legis. The formula is that of the Crowned and Conquering Child, the Prince who ascends the throne upon the death (transformation) of the King, his father. The monument of the Osirian Aeon, the Military-Industrial Complex of East and West, has achieved its apotheosis in the nuclear arsenals that are capable of sterilizing the planet. It's the mission of Horus to represent this existential ultimatum as the Lord of Force and Fire. "The necessity at the base of the formula is neither subsistence nor sovereignty: it is survival. The Child is the point of the Aeon: the continuation of the human race. The Law of the Aeon is Love under Will; the application of this Law destroys the poison remnants of Osiris while at the same time it places power and responsibility in the hands of the individual. "Running concurrently with the Aeon of Horus since 1974 is the Aeon of Maat. She is the Daughter, twin to Horus, and her formula is Truth and Balance. She complements Horus' warrior nature with her measure and justice. She ensures the survival that Horus establishes by initiating a fundamental change in humanity: the awakening of the Racial Unconscious to Racial Consciousness. As Horus signifies the Atomic Age, Maat signifies the Information Age; her Word is IPSOS, "by the same mouth". In the Double Aeon, food production has at the same time become more automated and more home-grown organic, as business or belief. Recombinant DNA research and cloning promises changes in this area. "The successful transformation of humanity into a doubly-conscious species brings about the Wordless Aeon, whose particular godform is Harpocrate. Physical speech is unnecessary with a shared Consciousness; therefore is this Aeon Wordless." - Nema, "Panaeonic Magick" Aion then describes the impact of this magickal material and the journey to link up with Nema. From there we begin to discuss the transmission of knowledge from trans-dimensional intelligence, the evolution of humanity, the advance of technology, archetypal energies, the expansion of consciousness, and the future. To begin episode 75, Robert describes the prophetic and synchronistic manner that he was introduced to the Tarot. As an artist, he was able to intuitively grasp the symbolism and levels of meaning portrayed in the Tarot images, allowing him to create "The Alchemical Tarot", a very highly-acclaimed and beautiful deck. Robert then describes his latest creation, "The Vampire Tarot". As a Tarot scholar, his research into the history and folklore of vampires and the Dracula legend led him to the realization that this story was like an inverse of the alchemical quest. The Great Work is analogous to the story told by the Major Arcana of the Tarot. In his analysis of the Dracula legend, Robert realized that this story was also a quest for immortality but in a far darker and different way, replacing the spiritual with the material. Robert tells us how the vampire legends invoke the Jungian concept of facing the shadow or the other. The resurrection of these legends in literature coincided with the scientific revolution and Romanticism. The original vampire stories, like the unrefined unconscious mind were dark and frightening, but when examined in the light, by writers and artists, these same stories can take on an alluring quality. Robert explains this evolution from a historical, psychological, and artistic perspective. We finish off the conversation as Robert describes how he views the Dracula legend as analogous to the quest for the Holy Grail. Dracula can be seen as the dark knight and those trying to defeat him as the Knights of the Round Table. His perspective on this legend and his beautiful artwork in "The Vampire Tarot" can bring forth yet another version of the archetypal hero's quest, there all along and just waiting for us to discover it.
